Ritmos cerebralesBrain rhythms

La línea discontinua es una onda de referencia con la misma frecuencia y fase 0°.On the left, a rotating vector: its height at each moment is the value of the wave. One full turn is one cycle. On the right, the wave over 1 second. The dashed line is a reference wave with the same frequency and 0° phase.

Frecuencia, amplitud y faseFrequency, amplitude and phase

An oscillation is a signal that repeats. Three numbers are enough to describe it: frequency (how many cycles per second, in hertz, Hz), amplitude (how far it rises and falls, in µV) and phase (where in the cycle it is at a given moment, in degrees).

Double the frequency: twice as many cycles fit in 1 s and the period halves.
Amplitude changes the height, not the rhythm. Phase shifts the wave in time without changing its shape.
  • Un desfase de 90° equivale a un cuarto de ciclo: a 10 Hz son 25 ms, a 40 Hz solo 6,25 ms.A 90° phase shift is a quarter of a cycle: 25 ms at 10 Hz, only 6.25 ms at 40 Hz.
Turn on “Real speed”: at 1–3 Hz (delta) you can follow the rotation; at alpha (10 Hz) it is already hard, and above about 15 Hz the screen cannot show it. The brain works at those speeds; that is why we use slow motion here.
Why do we measure phase in degrees rather than milliseconds?

Because phase is a position within the cycle, which does not depend on frequency: “the peak” is 0° in a 4 Hz wave and in a 40 Hz wave. That lets us compare the phase of different rhythms. To convert it to time: time = (phase / 360°) × period. Note: here 0° is the peak (cosine convention); some software uses another reference, such as the zero crossing.
